The Blanche Marie waterfalls are located to the west of Suriname, close to the Corantijn rivier which is the border with Guyana. West Suriname is known as unexplored paradise, still real wilderness. You will not come across many other tourists here. The ride is a road trip on unpaved bauxite, it is quite long (about 9 hours) but unforgettable. Most of West Suriname is covered with pristine rainforest and has an area of more than half of the Netherlands, of which only a small part is inhabited. This increases the chance of spotting animals!
During this four-day trip you will visit the village of Apoera, one of the largest Indian villages, where you will also spend the night. One of the highlights of the trip is definitely Suriname’s most beautiful and biggest waterfall. The impressive Blanche Marie waterfalls are located more than 300 km southwest of Paramaribo. During the ride you will pass various villages, creeks and bridges through the jungle. In the area of Blanche Marie, you will also visit the railway “From somewhere to nowhere”’. This railway was constructed at times when there where plans to mine the bauxite reserves in the Bakhuys area. You also explore the Caboerikreek, known for the giant otters that are regularly spotted here.
On the last day you return to Paramaribo along the same road as the way there . It is also possible to extend the trip to a real round trip and go by boat from Apoera to Nieuw Nickerie and Bigi Pan. From there you travel back to Paramaribo, a great 6 day trip.
